ABOUT US

ESTABLISHED IN TOTNES SINCE 2022

IT'S NOT ABOUT AESTHETICS & PLASTIC TALK

In a bid to create a unique coffee experience, Kommune Koffee Shack is an amazing breath of fresh air in comparison to your head down, laptop on, unsociable coffee shop. Built around creating a place to meet people and share your stories, Kommune Koffee has been a welcome addition to Totnes bustling life. Originally from Australia Sarah & Justin have brought over their VW campervan to serve Totnes with amazing tasting coffee, music and art.

Not just a place to get great coffee – Kommune Koffee also hosts a number of different local artists, known for space for artists alike to get together play music and entertain others, enjoy incredible music from local musicians while you drink with us.

WHERE DID WE START?

Originally from Australia, we came from down under to Devon and started Kommune Koffee shop in 2022 to bring some Australian charm to Totnes coffee scene. Our shop is built around our 1967 split-screen VW camper van that we serve all our drinks from. Scroll down and read about her story and how she ended up serving coffees in Totnes.

OUR SPLIT SCREEN BEAN MACHINE

MEET OUR 1967 SPLITSCREEN MURIEL

Born in the Summer of Love at the peak of Psychedelia, Muriel (named after my Grandmother) has lived through some great eras – she was cutting about at the same time legends like Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Bob Marley and The Grateful Dead were still performing. In fact The Grateful Dead’s Manager Sam Cutler even gifted her the Owsley Stanley Lightning Bolt sticker that graces her La Marzocco Coffee Machine.

She was born in September 1967 in Melbourne, Australia – she’s both a Virgo and a Splitscreen VW Panelvan. She has a Number 1 painted on the side of her to denote that she was in fact the first of Australia’s Foodtrucks.

Muriel was at the very heart of the Australian Coffee Scene which ultimately has been responsible for influencing cafes all around the world. Moving to the UK from Oz in 2019, Muriel lay dormant for three years until Kommüne opened its doors in Totnes in October 2022.

The Kommüne Koffee Shack is unique in that its heart stems from Muriel. All drinks are served from her and the energy and the vibe of the shop are built around her.

You’ll enter the space looking for a drink but will leave, filled with love, belonging and a deep sense of Kommunity.
